Thank you for spending 7 hours with us learning about retirement planning.

Below you’ll find a plethora of materials that complements the class presentation. Feel free to review at your own pace, and come back to this page at any time you’d like to access the information.

There’s also a wealth of information on our website, blog and Facebook page. We look forward to helping you get ready for retirement.

Next Step

If you haven’t already done so, the next step in your retirement planning education is to schedule your Q&A session with Brian. You can choose a phone or face to face meeting. This is a valuable no brainer opportunity to find out if you’re on the right track or what you need to get on the right track.

Here’s what will be covered:

  • Q&A…Bring any questions you have from class or about your current situation, current retirement plan (or lack thereof). The focus is on answering your most immediate questions.
  • Your Retirement Advisor Process…Brian will review the process and strategies he (and the academics) believe leads to the best possible retirement outcome.
  • Optional: Retirement Efficiency Assessment…you can provide us with some information (via an online intake form) prior to your Q&A session that enables Brian to run a Retirement Efficiency Assessment and then he can review the results with you in this session OR you can bring the required information to the meeting, review it with Brian and he’ll set up a second meeting to review the results of the asesssment. It’s entirely up to you.

Link to income projection online intake form or bring this list of documents with you to the meeting.

Schedule your Q&A here (choose Your Retirement Advisor Q&A as the event type.

Your Retirement Advisor Alpha Strategies for Betterment Retirement Outcomes

Many of the strategies in the below white paper were discussed in class. This is great summary of all the alpha strategies that are important to a better outcome in retirement.

Planners & Checklists

In our Your Retirement Advisor planning approach, we recommend that you take an inventory of your assets, income and expenses as a key part of discovering if you have enough of the “right stuff” to last throughout retirement. The Multi-Discipline Retirement planner and planning for retirement checklist allows you to get a snapshot of all the disciplines in your retirement plan and your retirement “to-do’s” in one place. The Personal Document locator is a very helpful tool.

Take a try at answering these 26 questions (and if you work with an advisor and not sure if he/she knows enough about “retirement” to help you, put him/her to the test too). Tip: if you’re 5-10 years from retirement and he/she hasn’t brought up many of these things with you, it’s safe to say he/she doesn’t really “know” retirement.

Income Sources & Income Planning in Retirement

The most important area to focus on in retirement readiness is determining if your savings and income will last a potentially long retirement. Here are the 4 important questions to address:

  1. How to suitably invest retirement assets for growth, while minimizing portfolio volatility and preserving principle? (night 2 of class)
  2. How to mitigate key risk factors that can sabotage your retirement? (night 2 of class)
  3. What’s the appropriate income distribution method to utilize, which reflects each client’s individual needs? (night 2 of class)
  4. Income sources you can count on and when to apply for Social Security to try to maximize income benefits?  (night 1 of class)

Retirement Planning Isn’t Easy…Get Help from a Hybrid “Retirement” Advisor

While retirement planning is imperative, it certainly isn’t easy. The accumulation phase of your life is easy compared with retirement. There’s so many more considerations and issues to address in retirement. While you can certainly undertake retirement education and be your own advisor, we recommend that you make the investment in working with a hybrid “retirement” advisor who has the experience and know-how every retiree needs. The investment is much more afforable than you think, potentially saving you thousands and thousands of dollars in bad decisions. Not just any advisor will do.
