Football and Finances at Lunenburg High Career Day

Financial Advisor, Lunenburg High Alum, and Former Professional Football Player Brian Saranovitz presented at Lunenburg High School’s Career Day on January 23rd. Brian spoke to 9-12 grade students at his alma mater in two different sessions. One on a career as a financial advisor and the other on a career as a pro athlete.

Brian graduated from Lunenburg High in 1981 and went on to become An All American football player at the University of New Hampshire. After graduating, Brian went on to play in three different pro leagues: the USFL, the Arena Football League and most notably the NFL, playing one year with the New England Patriots.

Brian, whose career was cut short due to injury talked to the students about having heart and determination, not only in sports but in school and in life. He also encouraged students to overcome the obstacles they will face in their lives…just because someone might say you can’t do something, it doesn’t mean you can’t.  Don’t quit. Prove them wrong was Mr. Saranovitz’s advice. He should know coming from a small town like Lunenburg and making it to the pro level.

Brian has applied his sports competitiveness and work ethic to his professional career of 30 years in the financial services industry. Recently, he launched Leominster-based Your Retirement Advisor with co-founder, Lynn Toomey. While Lynn chatted about her 30-year career in marketing and their company, Brian chatted with students in another session about the field of financial planning and his current focus on helping people all across the country plan their retirement. Brian encouraged students to consider the financial services career based on the statistics: the average financial advisor is 58 and many will be retiring over the next years with job growth rate at 60%.  His message to the female students was that 80% of advisors are men and the industry is looking to hire women. There are many colleges now where young men and women can study financial planning. And with 78 million baby boomers retiring over the next 10 years (many of whom are not prepared for retirement), and many more people not financially literate (1 in 5 people can’t pass a test of basic financial literacy), there is a strong demand for smart, young, new advisors.

About Brian Saranovitz

As a baby boomer himself, Brian is a co-founder and president of Your Retirement Advisor, as well as the chief retirement advisor and YRA University instructor. Brian, a former professional football player (most notably for the New England Patriots) and a graduate of the University of New Hampshire, has been a financial advisor for over 30 years at Saranovitz Capital Management, founded by his father Norman in 1970. As a jock turned geek, Brian is obsessed with retirement research and finding the best strategies for his students and clients. Brian has witnessed firsthand clients struggling to understand the myriad of issues they face while preparing for retirement.

When he’s not reading white papers or books on retirement, Brian juggles spending time with his significant other, YRA co-founder Lynn Toomey, their brood of kids ranging in age from 14 to 29, and his large family and group of friends…many of whom are clients too! Brian believes in a balanced life (incorporating fitness, nutrition and smiling every day), and the 80/20 rule…which means it’s okay to have a little ice cream once in a while!

About Lynn Toomey

As an “almost” baby boomer herself, Lynn is a co-founder and head of marketing and operations for the Your Retirement Advisor team, as well as the main contact for all inquiries about the company and its mission. Lynn is a marketing and start-up expert with 30 years of success launching companies and products. She’s also the founder of an art entertainment company, Let’s Gogh Art. Lynn holds a master’s degree from Simmons College and has a passion for internet entrepreneurship and personal finance.

As much as Lynn loves her work, she understands the value of relationships and taking time for “play” (although her kids will tell you she’s the queen of multi-tasking…tapping away at her laptop, while also microwaving dinner, while also slightly paying attention to a conversation with her twins)! You can usually find her and her significant other dishing out advice to their six kids, hosting a gaggle of girls for a sleepover, taking in a spin or yoga class, volunteer coaching, hosting friends and family for a Patriots game or simply enjoying all that life has to offer…afterall, life is all about balance, being happy and preparing for a dreamy retirement.
